The San Francisco Area’s Famous Park
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is a world-famous park that preserves 80,000 acres of shores, hills, and historic sites in the Bay Area. It’s home to some of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

If you want a fun family activity, visit the Giant Forest Museum to learn more about this fantastic national park. The museum is housed in a historic 1928 building with small exhibits to teach kids about the park’s history.
Another popular attraction in the park is Moro Rock, a granite dome offering sweeping views. It’s a short but steep hike up to the top of the rock, so it’s worth planning for an hour or so in high season.
Mono Lake National Park
If you’re looking for a unique side trip in the Bay Area, consider Mono Lake. Its stunning scenery is otherworldly, and the limestone tufa towers that rise majestically out of its waters are awe-inspiring.
The lake itself is a salty-alkaline lake whose waters are two and a half times as salty as the ocean. This makes it unique among desert lakes in that it supports an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp, alkali flies, and microscopic algae, a food source for over 80 species of migratory birds.
Its tufa towers are one of the park’s most notable features; visitors come from all over to take photos of them. However, it’s important to remember that these tufas are fragile and prone to erosion.
Mono Lake is known for its political and environmental struggles over water rights. In 1941, Los Angeles diverted large quantities of water from streams flowing into the lake, raising the lake’s salinity level and imperiling the lake’s delicate ecosystem.
Point Reyes National Seashore
Jutting dramatically into the Pacific, the West Coast’s only national seashore protects a 70,000-acre coastal preserve of beaches, lagoons, estuaries, and ponds. Here, breakers pound remote shores, and wisps of fog wash over strange rock formations.
Point Reyes is home to over 1500 species of plants and animals that thrive in the park’s rocky headlands, open grasslands, and forested ridges. The park offers several outdoor activities, including hiking, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and camping.
One of the most popular and beautiful ways to enjoy a day at the Beach in Point Reyes is by kayaking Tomales Bay. You can rent a kayak at several places in the area and enjoy the scenery from the water, accompanied by local wildlife.
Another popular activity is tide pooling or exploring the colorful pools that form on the ocean floor. Sculptured Beach is an excellent place for this, but you can also try Duxbury Reef near Bolinas. Whale watching is also a perfect way to experience the area’s wildlife.
Golden Gate National Recreation Area
